During this year, the children will focus on consolidating their knowledge and skills in preparation for the transition to secondary school. They will also be preparing for the SATs (Standard Assessment Tests).
Year 6 pupils will take part in SATs, which are national assessments in English and maths designed to measure their attainment levels.
English
Pupils will develop strong reading comprehension and writing skills, including grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. They will also improve their communication through speaking and listening activities.
Maths
Children will focus on mastering multiplication and division facts (including times tables up to 12 × 12), understanding fractions, decimals, and percentages, and applying their mathematical knowledge to solve problems.
PE Days
PE takes place every Tuesday. In addition, during alternate half terms—starting with Autumn 2—PE will also be on Thursdays.
Homework
- Spellings: Weekly spellings will be sent out on Mondays and should be completed in preparation for a test the following Monday.
- Reading Books: Children may change their reading books once completed. We will check reading records weekly to ensure children are reading at home and school at least four times a week.
- Maths: Children should regularly access Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS):
https://ttrockstars.com/
(We will provide usernames and passwords; the same credentials are used for both platforms.)
Seesaw
We will provide a parent code to allow access to photos and updates about your child’s learning on Seesaw.
Transition from Year 6 to Year 7
The move from primary to secondary school is an exciting milestone in your child’s education. At Fairfield we understand that this transition can also feel like a big change for both children and parents.
Before you choose which secondary school to apply to, local schools will be holding open nights where you and your child can look around, meet staff and get a feel for the school. Look out for an email from us with details of these events.
Throughout Year 6, we work closely with local secondary schools to ensure the move is as smooth as possible.
Our transition programme includes:
- Information sharing – we pass on details about your child’s progress, strengths and needs to their new school.
- Visits and taster days –pupils meet staff, explore the school site and try out lessons.
- In-class preparation – activities and discussions help children build independence, organisation skills, and confidence.
- Additional support – extra sessions and visits are arranged for children who may find the move more challenging.
We know that every child’s experience is unique, so we take care to provide extra support if needed. Our aim is for each pupil to leave Year 6 feeling ready for the challenges and opportunities of Year 7.
